Building a Resilient Bioeconomy for Hawaii’s Future

Hawaii’s small farmers are struggling to remain on their land and continue farming. HOSPRO is a 501(c)5 agriculture cooperative dedicated to supporting small, local farmers through developing integrated agricultural systems centered around oil palms. The production of palm oil will increase their profits, improve their soils and enable them to stay on their lands.

For a More Self-Sufficient Hawaii
For Hawaii's Small Farmers

Hawaii currently imports 80-90% of everything it consumes at great cost. HOSPRO’s mission is to enhance Hawaii's resiliency by providing biodiesel, edible oils, animal feed, and soil conservation solutions by developing a sustainable palm oil industry. This approach will benefit farmers, the people of Hawaii and Hawaii’s lands, the ‘aina.

For Keeping It Local

Most importantly, HOSPRO is committed to increasing food and fuel security for Hawaii. For 200 years, extractive agricultural industries for global markets have destroyed Hawaii’s environment and economy. There is no need for global markets with oil palms here as all aspects of production, along with profits and products, can remain in the islands. With its biochar facility, HOSPRO plans to improve soil fertility, while its mill will purchase and process farmers’ fruit into biofuel, animal feed, vegetable oil, etc., for local families. Thus, Hawaii can reduce its dependence on increasingly erratic forces in global markets.
